Sanitary products, which are an integral part of daily life for millions of people around the world, include a wide range of opportunities for cellulose fibres. Among these, tampons are a common choice for menstrual hygiene. Despite their widespread use, the complex mechanisms of fluid absorption in tampons were not a priority for a long time and received little attention from researchers. This has now changed as research has identified the properties of cellulose fibres that have the greatest impact.

The use of bio-based superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) as a key component in nonwoven-based sanitary products has long been discussed, as bio-based SAPs have similar physical properties to fossil-based superabsorbent polymers and therefore do not require many changes in the manufacturing process. The session aims to inform the industry about little known processing options that are now available on a laboratory scale to stimulate research and development towards efficient processing concepts as sustainable and economical processes. Year after year nova-Institute grants the “Cellulose Fibre Innovation of the Year” award in the context of the “Cellulose Fibres Conference”, that will take place in Cologne on 13 and 14 March 2024. In advance, the conferences advisory board nominated six remarkable products, including cellulose fibres from textile waste and straw, a novel technology for dying cellulose-based textiles and a construction panel as well as geotextiles. The innovations will be presented by the companies on the first day of the event. All conference participants can vote for one of the six nominees and the top three winners will be honoured with the “Cellulose Fibre Innovation of the Year” award.
